Fighting Human Trafficking as a Community!
I am encouraged by the amazing community support shown by those who came out to educate themselves on human trafficking in rural Pennsylvania. We were privileged to host Wyoming County District Attorney Joe Peters and Lantern Rescue Founder Korrin Moon for a Wednesday evening panel discussion at Towanda High School in Bradford County, attracting nearly 100 attendees. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday joined the panel Thursday evening at the Fireman’s Annex in Wellsboro, addressing a nearly full house of 150 participants.
It was a tough topic, with lots of heavy conversations. Our speakers dispelled the common misconceptions regarding human trafficking, highlighting how internet and social media platforms let predators into our homes to exploit our children. Online trafficking is a hidden crime that’s hard to spot, but I encourage parents and guardians to remain engaged with the kids in their lives, maintain open communication and educate them on online safety. My desire is that the conversations do not just end here, but as families we continue to have these hard conversations as we move forward.
Those in attendance were encouraged to actively participate in preventing the rapid increase in this crime within our community. We can do that by investing in children’s lives and being vigilant about hidden dangers. Reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement is vital as well. It will take community collaboration to ensure the safety of our children.
For those unable to attend, we will be sharing several segments of the sessions in the upcoming weeks to further help spread the word. In the meantime, full video of both sessions is available here (Towanda) and here (Wellsboro).
For more information on cyber safety, please check out Attorney General Dave Sunday’s Cyber Safety, What to Know brochure.
