Leading in Legislation: Dads Defending Daughters

As a dad, I take seriously my duty to defend my daughter. As a lawmaker, I also take seriously my responsibility to protect the rights of my daughter and ALL daughters to compete on a level playing field when it comes to individual and team athletics. That’s why I’ve joined with a group of fellow dads/lawmakers in reintroducing legislation to stop biological males from competing in teams or sports designated for females. It just makes sense; our daughters deserve to enjoy fair competition, and it has taken far too long for what should be a commonsense vote.

House Democrats are doing all they can to avoid this issue by conducting “legislative gymnastics.” In July, majority Democrats responded to a discharge resolution on Senate Bill 9 by re-referring the bill to the House Health Committee. The House Education Committee chairman argued the bill would be more appropriately addressed in the Health Committee. However, soon after it was introduced, the dads’ bill, House Bill 1849, was assigned to the House Education Committee anyway. Regardless of the committee charged with considering this bill, dads remain steadfast in defending OUR daughters.

It was truly inspiring to participate in the PA March for Life, the largest advocacy day in Harrisburg, alongside my colleagues and individuals of all ages who came together to advocate for the voiceless yesterday.

Game Commission Night

We had an outstanding turnout for our Game Commission Night last week! It was great to see so many people come out. The evening kicked off with our junior hunters, who had a blast sharpening their skills in the laser shot trailer.

Pennsylvania Game Commission Furbearer Biologist Thomas Keller presented on the history and management of the Eastern Coyote in Pennsylvania, while local hunter Austin Dunham shared helpful tips on hunting Eastern Coyote here in the Northern Tier. The night ended with updates from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, followed by a time of questions and answers. It was such a fun and informative night. If you tried to tune in for the live stream, we apologize for the poor quality of the streaming. Don’t worry; the event was recorded and we anticipate posting the video sometime this week.

One Step Closer

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission recently approved a joint settlement for Verizon Communications to acquire 100% of Frontier Communications. Included in the agreement is the requirement that Verizon fulfill the service quality obligations in last year’s settlement between Frontier, the Office of Consumer Advocate and the Office of Small Business Advocate that aimed to ensure improved service to customers across the Northern Tier.

New Scholarship Opportunity for PA Students!

America250PA, the state’s commission charged with helping to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, announced it is now accepting applications for its Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program.

The organization plans to award $250,000 in scholarships, $10,000 each to 25 deserving students attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities in the 2026-27 academic year. A dozen of those scholarships will go to students attending a Pennsylvania community college, while the remainder will go to students attending any Pennsylvania post-secondary college or university.

Additional information and a link to the application are available here.

Help Stop Suicide

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to remember and honor those lost to suicide and to try to save lives by educating ourselves about the signs of suicide.

Those signs include feelings of hopelessness or of being a burden to loved ones, sleeping too little or too much, withdrawing or isolating oneself, and starting or increasing use of alcohol or drugs. A full list of warning signs and tips from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are available here.

If you or someone you know is in imminent danger of self-harm, call 911. Help is also available by calling 988 to connect with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

To learn more about suicide risks and how to help someone in crisis, visit www.preventsuicidepa.org.
