Owlett to Host Hard-to-Read License Plate Replacement Events

March 27, 2025

WELLSBORO – Responding to the growing number of residents dealing with illegible license plates on their vehicles, Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) is hosting two events to help get those plates replaced at no cost.

The events will be held on Tuesday, April 15, at the Troy Sale Barn, 50 Ballard St. in Troy; and on Wednesday, April 16, at the Wellsboro Fire Department Annex, 21 East Ave. in Wellsboro. Both events will run from 4-7 p.m.

“PennDOT is required by law to replace license plates that are deemed illegible at no cost to vehicle owners,” Owlett said. “These events were very popular last year and will help make it more convenient for people who need their plates replaced to get the process started.”

A registration plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.

Police departments from Troy and Wellsboro will be on hand to view driver’s plates, at their respective locations, and if the plates are deemed illegible, paperwork to start the replacement process will be completed.

Participants should be sure to bring their vehicle with the affected plate attached, along with their unexpired PA driver’s license and current vehicle registration card.

Register in advance to expedite processing at RepOwlett.com or by calling the Wellsboro office at 570-724-1390 or Troy office at 570-297-3045. Callers should have their driver’s license and registration information handy.
